The traditional town of Artà is located in the middle of a wide valley at the foot of a small mountain in the northeast of Mallorca. Most of the town center has been converted into a pedestrian zone.
The town is overlooked by the fortified Santuari Sant Salvador, which is one of the main sights of the town. The sanctuary and its walls were originally built in the 14th century and then reconstructed in the 19th century.
The area around Artà is known for its pottery production and basketry. Archaeological excavations – such as the talayotic settlement of Ses Paisses – have unearthed woven fibers that indicate the craft is one of the oldest on the island.
A walk through the ramparts of the Islamic castle Almudaina d’Artà offers wonderful views of the surrounding landscape. There are some beaches that you can hike to. The way there is just as beautiful as the beaches themselves. Also worth seeing are the Cuevas d’Artà stalactite caves on the coast.
Artà hosts two markets. The general market in Plaça del Conqueridor and the handicrafts market in the Villa Na Batlessa property. Both take place on Tuesday mornings and are particularly popular with local residents.
Palma can be reached in about an hour’s drive.
