Talayotic, Roman and Moorish archaeological remains have been found in this area, linked to Mallorca’s rich history.
Son Bonet Airfield is also not far from Marratxi and was Mallorca’s first civilian airfield. The first commercial flight took off from here in 1927.
The Pottery Museum and the numerous pottery workshops show the great importance of this craft, which has been attributed to Marratxi since the end of the 17th century. Many of the workshops are located in historic buildings, where visitors can admire and purchase antique objects and unique handicrafts.
The Museu del Fang pottery museum is housed in an old mill in Sa Cabaneta and includes hundreds of traditional and contemporary ceramic pieces, as well as tools and objects donated by the clay factories. The different areas are dedicated to jugs, crockery, pots and of course Mallorca’s emblematic clay pipe, known as the Siurell.
Local artisans exhibit their wares at the popular Fira del Fang pottery fair every April. The week-long event offers the opportunity to meet artisans and discover traditional as well as contemporary ceramic styles. Each year the fair is dedicated to a different theme.
Marratxi is about 18 km north of Palma and offers its residents the advantages of a big city living. Hospitals, schools, shops, restaurants and banks are in close proximity. If you don’t want to drive, you can take the train from Marratxi to Palma’s Plaza España intermodal station in 15 minutes.
